Unregistered presidential candidate of Belarus Valery Tsepkalo, who fled to Moscow, called on the Russian authorities not to help the current authorities of his country, Belarus, and said his goal is to make President Alexander Lukashenko a pariah. He said this on 24 July, the first after the escape of the interview, which gave to the TV channel “Rain”.
“I ask the Russian leadership: do not help, simply because you do not help the Belarusian people. The Russian leadership believes that when it gives assistance to the government, it assists the common people. No, not ordinary people. The maintenance of this huge machine – all the money to go,” said Tsepkalo.
He says that the money from Russia and the International monetary Fund go “straight to the army, internal troops”.
He also said that his goal after his departure from Belarus – to show other countries the real image of Lukashenko.
“The most important thing we did – we showed the world the true nature of this man. We stripped and were able to make it in the eyes of the Belarusian society, the Belarusian people an outcast,” said the opposition leader.
According to him, Lukashenka will try to rig results of presidential elections.
“I imagine it will be [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to watch after what he will draw votes,” – said Tsepkalo.
The politician’s wife Veronika Tsepkalo, July 24 said that her husband was going to hold, so he left the country with children.
July 20, their children taken to one of the EU countries , another politician from the opposition – Svetlana Tikhanovski. She stated that their address began to receive threats.
Tsepkalo applied to become a candidate for the presidency, but the country’s Central election Commission rejected more than half of the signatures, the diplomat gathered in support of his nomination. He and the banker Victor Babariko were considered the main rivals of the incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, but the latter is also not allowed for the elections – due to allegations of financial crimes.
In this regard, on 16 July the headquarters of Babariko and Tsepkalo decided to unite with Tikhanovski.
The presidential elections scheduled for 9 August.
