Protection of Russian Oleg Pulatova, which is one of four accused in the case of a catastrophe Malaysian Boeing 777 in the sky over the Donbass in 2014, during a court session on 8 June insisted on the need for a personal meeting with the defendant, reported “Interfax-Ukraine”.
None of the four defendants in the hall was not present. Pulatov on the process is represented by a team of lawyers, two of them were at the meeting – Sabine ten Doeschate and Boudewijn van Eyck.
Doeschate said that with the introduction of the pandemic coronavirus measures the lawyers had no opportunity to communicate with his client. She recalled that the Netherlands and Russia closed the border, which “resulted in significant implications for protection.”
“We planned to examine the case, and then to spend two weeks with Mr. Pulatov for discussion. But it became clear that it would be impossible,” she said.
The lawyer insisted that discussing such matters with the client either by phone or on the Internet is impossible, because it fears to be listened to, that “is undesirable”. She also pointed to language difficulties when communicating with the client, as the lawyers speak Dutch and English, and Pulatov – only in Russian.
“As a consequence – every sentence that we say should be translated into Russian, his response should also be translated. It’s much easier to do if you are sitting in the same room. It is impossible to discuss such a big deal by phone or Internet translator – it takes a lot of time and money, and many important details can be lost in translation. We had to go to Russia and spend time with him. Without this it is impossible to build trust”, – said Dushata.
She also said that “it would be an illusion” to believe that in a short period of time, the protection will be able to study the case materials, the investigation, which took six years (according to the NU.nlthe materials of the case consist of 41 thousand pages).
“It was an illusion that we are alone even with the help of our assistants, will be able to catch up with a six-year investigation. But we did everything we could,” said Dushata.
Prosecutors during the meeting said that, quite possibly, himself Pulatov refused to extensive contacts with lawyers, and it should not affect the schedule of the trial, reported Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty.
“The prosecution says Pulatov has decided to restrict contact [with us], but it was not Pulatov, and coronavirus”, – said in response to Dushata.
June 8 hearing in the case of MH17 in the District court of the Hague (Netherlands) lasted seven hours. The next meeting will be held on 9 June. NU.nl reported that at the beginning of the second unit of the judicial process the investigation reports to prosecutors, then their requests will be announced by the lawyers. Presumably this will happen on June 22.
Pulatov (Callsign Viper) is the only one of the four accused, who decided to participate in the process. In court it is a group of lawyers. In 2014, the Russians, for , according to the Dutch Prosecutor’s office, was the Deputy head of the “intelligence “DNR”. The research team Bellingcat suggeststhat the former Colonel of the Russian armed forces Pulatov was involved in the protection of the installation “Buk”, from which the plane was shot down.
The Prosecutor Thijs Berger at the hearing on March 10 said that if Pulatov agree to testify in court, he can get a guarantee that you will not be arrested.
The Boeing 777, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur flight MH17, crashed on July 17, 2014 near Torez in Donetsk region. Killed all 298 people who were on Board (citizens of Netherlands, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, UK, Germany, Belgium, Philippines, Canada and New Zealand).
According to the findings of the international investigation team, flight MH17 was shot down from the complex “Buk” from territory controlled by Pro-Russian militants. After the crash, and the weapon was returned to Russia. Investigators said that “Buk” arrived to Donbas from the Kursk region. The group regained the route which carried the installation.
In may 2018 the Netherlands and Australia officially blamed Russia for the Downing of flight MH17. Russia his involvement in disaster deny.
March 9, 2020, the Hague regional court began to consider the case of the crash of the Malaysian aircraft. Defendants in the case four: in addition to Pulatova, it’s “defense Minister” groups “DNR”, Russian citizen Igor Girkin (Strelkov), the head of “GRU DNI”, a citizen of the Russian Federation Sergey Dubinsky (Sullen) and a citizen of Ukraine, the commander of the reconnaissance battalion of the 2nd division “of the GRU DPR” Leonid Kharchenko (Mole).
The venue of the process for reasons of public interest and a large number of participants decided to move from the courthouse to the legal complex of the city of Badhoevedorp near Schiphol airport.
