The United States have reduced permanent presence of its troops in Germany from 36 000 to 24 000. This was at a briefing in Washington on July 29, said the Minister of defense mark Esper, informs NBC News.
According to him, the move is aimed at strengthening NATO and containment of Russia. The redeployment will allow US armed forces to move into a “new era of competition of great powers,” said the Minister.
Of the 11 900 American military personnel withdrawn from Germany, about 6400 return to the United States and about 5,600 military will be accommodated in other NATO countries.
Esper added that the implementation plan will begin in a few weeks.
In early June it became known that the President of the United States Donald trump is planning to reduce the number of American troops in Germany before 25,000 people. He said the military, which will withdraw from Germany, was transferred to Poland.
Foreign Minister of Germany Heiko Maas said that such actions would not meet the interests of the United States. The Prime Ministers of four German States addressed members of the U.S. Congress with a request to block plans for the withdrawal of American troops from the country.
Trump not once criticized the allies for the lack of funding NATO. He argued that Germany pays contributions equal to 1% of its GDP, and US 4%. In 2018, the American President threatened to withdraw from the Alliance.
