Social network Twitter amid protests over the death of an African-American George Floyd in the United States will cease to use the terms “master”, “slave” and “black list” in the code. On 3 July, reports the BBC.
These terms are often used in program codes created a few decades ago.
According to experts, change of conditions could cost millions and months.
In programming the term “master” (“master”) refers to the basic version of the code that controls the “slaves” or replicas (exact copies). “Blacklist” is used to describe elements, which are automatically prohibited, generally prohibited websites.
Twitter also plans to replace the term “white list” in “list permissions” and “master/slave” to “leader/follower”.
From the use of such terms also refused U.S. Bank, JPMorgan, and Google’s web browser Chromium and the Android operating system encourages developers to avoid the use of the terms “blacklist” and “whitelist”.
Global brands are also closely watching the logos and names of their products to avoid racial stereotypes. In particular, in late June, the American confectionery company Dreyer”s decided to change the name of the dessert Popsicle, because it can be derogatory for the people of the far North.
And on 26 June an American post-hardcore band Slaves (in translation from English – “slaves”) announcedthat it will abandon its name because of the negative racial connotations of the word.
Floyd died may 25 after a tough police detention. Forensic examination confirmed that the death was caused by strangulation (police officer Showin knee pinned Floyd to the asphalt, becoming on his neck). Involved in the arrest of a COP was later charged.
The death of Floyd provoked mass protests (sometimes with riots and acts of vandalism), first in Minneapolis and then in the whole country.
The city of Minneapolis announced the beginning of investigations into possible abuses by the police. On 5 June, the city Council forbade the police to use any chokes or techniques that limit the area of the neck. 7 June, nine of the 12 members of the Council stated that the vote for the disbandment of the police Department, together with the public to create a new security model.
