Relations between the US and the EU trump commented in the context of trade wars with China. According to the American President, the United States is constantly competing with a huge number of countries, including Europe, “which has never treated us well.”
“The European Union was created in order to use the United States. [The EU] was established and is using US to their advantage. I know that, they know that I know, but other presidents had no idea,” said trump.
Answering questions of journalists, the President said that was referring to trade relations with the EU. “We deal with them all the time. The relationship is very good, but they are bad for us in trading. They were very unfair to us for many, many decades,” explained trump.
After assuming the office of President of the United States in 2017 trump has repeatedly criticized the EU and its predecessors for unfair and disadvantageous for the Washington trade agreements. So, in 2018, trump signed a decree on the introduction of a 25 percent import duties on steel and 10 per cent on the import of aluminium. Among other things, the duties apply in relation to EU countries.
