The President of the United States Donald trump in an interview with The Wahington Post said that does not want to withdraw the United States from North Atlantic Treaty organization (NATO), but would have taken this step, if the Alliance partners did not increase defense spending. In particular, answering the question whether he wants US withdrawal from NATO, he said, “No, don’t want to. But I want [partners] are paying a fair price”.
According to trump, thanks to his efforts, the costs of the Alliance on defense over the past three years increased by $140 billion to $400 billion.
NATO in 2014, agreed to increase defense spending in response to Russian aggression against Ukraine. It was planned that all NATO members to 2024 will bring its military spending at least 2% of its GDP.
