“Meeting on the Elbe – the culmination of a huge effort of many countries and peoples, United in the framework of the Declaration by the United Nations of 1942. This joint struggle has demanded huge sacrifices of millions of soldiers, sailors, and civilians in many theatres of war”, – the document says.
It notes that “spirit of the Elbe” is an example of how “our country can put aside conflict, to build trust and cooperate for a common purpose.”
“Giving back today the most serious challenges of the XXI century, we pay tribute to the valor and courage of all those who fought together to defeat fascism. Their heroic feat will never be forgotten,” – said in a statement.
25 APR 1945, Soviet, British and American soldiers shook hands on the bridge over the river Elbe. Less than a month in Berlin, capital of Nazi Germany, was taken by the allies.
