The office of foreign assets (OFAC) of the U.S. Treasury Department on July 15 announced the introduction of sanctions against three individuals and five legal entities, which are linked to Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin. About it it is reported on the Agency’s website.
Sanctions imposed against the Russian company “M invest”, the Chinese Shen Yang Jing Cheng Machinery Imp&Exp, Hong Kong Shine Dragon Group and Zhe Jiang Jiayi Small Commodities Trade Company and the Sudanese Meroe Gold. Under the sanctions in connection with Prigogine were also Russians Igor Lavrenkov, Michael Potapkin and Andrew Mandel – executives “M invest”.
In a statement, the U.S. state Department notesthat these individuals and companies helped Prigogine shy away from previously imposed us sanctions and “to spread pernicious influence around the world.”
“M invest” is a Russian company which is owned or controlled by Prigogine and serves as a cover for forces PMC “Wagner” serving in the Sudan and responsible for developing plans for the former President of Sudan Omar al-Bashir to suppress the protesters, seeking democratic reforms”, – noted in the state Department.
Close to the Kremlin businessman Prigogine (in the Russian media called him “restaurateur of Russian President Vladimir Putin”) is under U.S. sanctions in connection with intervention in the US presidential election in 2016.
In particular, 16 February 2018, the U.S. Department of justice filed charges in the case of the intervention in the presidential election of 13 citizens of Russia and three companies, including Prigogine and his “online research”, “Concord Management and Consulting”, “Concord catering”. All defendants are charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States. According to the Ministry, the Agency bought space on servers in the United States and has registered hundreds of accounts in Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, using stolen or fraudulent U.S. documents, and fictitious Bank accounts.
September 30, 2019, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed additional sanctions related to alleged Russia’s attempts to influence American elections. In the sanctions list included two members of the “Agency of Internet research”, the three companies related to Prigogine, as well as a yacht and three aircraft, which he enjoys. Also, the Finance Ministry said the Prigogine and four members of his entourage who have been sanctioned earlier.
Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said that the United States “will continue to ensure that Prigogine and people like him are unable to hide and live comfortably for as long as they pursue destabilizing activities that threaten the interests of the United States, their allies.”
