On 16 July the Supreme court of Belarus (FAB) refused to open a case on the complaint of the representative of the Victor Babariko the decision to deny him registration as a candidate for the presidency of the country. Determination about it is published on the court’s website.
The representative of the plaintiff asked the VSB to cancel the decision of the Central election Commission and to oblige the CEC to register a candidate Babariko.
“The right to challenge in court the refusal to register a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Belarus granted by law only to the person who is nominated as a candidate for the President of the Republic of Belarus. Having the intention to be a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Belarus Babariko the resolution of the Central Commission dated July 14, 2020 no. 92 not appealed against and the appeal to the Supreme court is not signed. Since the signing of such a complaint by the representative of the person nominated as a candidate for the President of the Republic of Belarus, electoral legislation does not provide, a motion to dismiss should be denied,” – explained in the document.
Ex-banker of Babariko, who was called the main rival of incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, was taken into custody June 18, a day before the deadline, which is given to collect signatures for the candidate. Belarusian law enforcers accused him of financial crimes. On 15 July, the CEC refused to register Babariko.
In addition, the Central election Commission of Belarus has rejected more than half of the signaturesthat ex-diplomat Valery Tsepkalo gathered in support of his nomination.
Only the CEC registered five candidates. Apart from Lukashenko, for the presidency expect the co-Chairman of the Association “Tell the truth” Andrey Dmitriev, ex-Deputy Anna Konopacka, the leader of the party “Belarusian social-democratic Gramada” Sergey Caraceni and wife blogger Sergei Tikhanovski Svetlana.
