The national social security Institute of Italy believes in the official statistics of deaths from the coronavirus may not be accounted around 19 thousand deaths, writes La Repubblica.
In particular, the Institute indicates that from 1 March to 30 April, i.e. at the peak of the epidemic, the number of deaths in Italy by 46.9 thousand exceeded the forecast level (the expected mortality rate 109,5 thousand; actual: 156,4 thousand). During this period, from the coronavirus in the country has died, according to official statistics, 27.9 thousand people.
The Institute notes that the reasons for the increase of mortality by 18.9 thousand unknown. However, 18.4 thousand of them are in the Northern regions of the country most affected by the epidemic of the coronavirus.
In the Institute’s opinion, the fact that in recent years the mortality rate was stable, suggests that most of the 19 thousand excess deaths caused by the ongoing epidemic.
The institution noted that it can be not only people who died directly from the coronavirus outside hospitals, but also patients who did not receive the necessary medical care because of the congestion of the health system.
