The murder of a popular singer in Ethiopia led to mass protests, more than 160 dead
166 people died in the week during the mass unrest in Ethiopia that erupted after the murder of the singer and the public figure, the fighter for the rights of Oromo nation Hacalo of Hundessa. It is reported by the BBC.
Among the victims were 11 police officers.
167 people were seriously injured.
29 Jun 34-year-old artist was found shot to death. Police have not reported a possible motive for the crime. It is known that Hundessa received death threats.
Demonstrations turned violent battle in the day of the funeral of Hundessa – 2 July.
The BBC reported that 35 people were taken into custody in connection with the murder and riots. Among the arrested politician Jahwar Mohammed, who prevented the burial of the singer in the homeland, demanding that the farewell ceremony was held in Addis Ababa.
Hundessa, at the time five years served in prison for anti-government protests, was one of the informal leaders of the uprising of the Oromo, which led to the change of government in Ethiopia to 2018. He began his solo music career in 2009, becoming one of the most popular singers in the country.
