In 2020, the magazine France Football will not be giving the award to the best player in the world – “Golden ball”. This is stated in the column of the chief editor of the edition of Pascal Ferre.
He stressed that in a pandemic, the organizers would not be able fairly to evaluate and to compare the game of contenders for the award. “We can’t force ourselves to choose the best results in truncated seasons with lots of special arrangements,” wrote Ferre.
Furthermore, the journalist noted, France Football would not want to announce the winner with a footnote that he won “exceptional circumstances caused by the health crisis because COVID-19”.
The chief editor of the magazine added that the award will not be awarded for the first time since its founding in 1956, but the decision of the organizers seems to be “the most responsible and logical.”
Last year “Golden ball” got forward Spanish “Barcelona” and the Argentina national team Lionel Messi. He received the trophy six times (the record). The Cristiano Ronaldo five awards.
