The CEC refused to register Babariko presidential candidate

The Central election Commission of Belarus refused to register a banker Victor Babariko a presidential candidate. This decision was taken at the CEC session on July 14, according to Belarusian portal

CEC head Lidia Yermoshina announced that Babariko refused registration from-for “discrepancies of the Declaration of income and assets and the participation of foreign organizations in the election campaign” of the candidate. According to investigators, Babariko was the organizer of the illegal actions of the Bank, tried to influence witnesses, to hide the traces of crimes. The Belarusian KGB claimed that the activities of Babariko involved “puppeteers” from among the “big bosses “Gazprom” and that detention is not connected with the election campaign in Belarus. The foreign Ministry of Belarus said that the former banker may be involved in money laundering and tax evasion.

Babariko called the main competitor of the incumbent President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, who rules the country since 1994 and intends to run for another term.
