American and British scientists have found that the African continent is gradually splits into two parts near the valley of the afar region of Ethiopia. About it writes on 17 July, told the TV channel NBC News.
This is a desert area located at the junction of three tectonic plates, which are very slow to separate from each other. According to scientists, this complex geological process will eventually split Africa into two parts and create a new oceanic basin. According to forecasts, this may happen in a few million years.
At the moment the most obvious proof is the crack in the Ethiopian desert with a length of 56 km.
It is unknown what contributes to such geological processes. Some scientists suggest that a plume of superheated rocks rising from beneath the Earth’s mantle may be the cause of a continental rift in the region.
The rift in this place was formed in 2005. Experts say that usually such changes take centuries, but this happened within a few days.
The valley afar is one of the hottest places on Earth. Scientists believe that as a result of the Gulf of Aden and the Red sea will flood the afar and East African rift valley creating new ocean, and part of East Africa will become its own little continent.
