The Turkish player Cevher Toktas acting the part of Amateur club “Bursa Yildirim Spor”, confessed to killing his 5-year-old son 11 days later after officials decided that the death of the baby occurred because of difficulty breathing without signs of violent death.
It is reported that on April 23 Toktas brought his son to a local hospital after he had a cough and high temperature. Doctors at the hospital immediately isolated the boy and the father, because the child had the typical symptoms COVID-19. Some time later, on the same day, Toktas called doctors to the house and said that the boy had difficulty breathing. Doctors delivered the child in the ICU, but he died less than two hours.
Considering the shortness of breath characteristic of patients with COVID-19, the authorities initially believed the cause of death of the boy is a coronavirus. But 11 days after the incident, Toktas went to the local police station and explained what he had done. In its statement, the footballer said that he smothered his son with a pillow when they were alone in the house.
“I put a pillow on his son, who was lying on his back. Within 15 minutes I pushed the pillow without lifting it. My son was struggling at this time. When he stopped moving, I lifted up the pillow. Then I screamed, to clear his suspicions,” – said in a statement.
Asked about his motive, Toktas said killed his son because he just “didn’t love him.”
“I never liked his younger son after his birth. I don’t know why I don’t like it. The only reason I killed him that day, that he did not like me. I have no mental problems,” said Toktas.
Toktash was arrested and will stand trial for “murder of a close relative”, punishable by up to life imprisonment. The authorities also decided to exhume the boy’s body for an autopsy.
