Since the beginning of the election campaign in Belarus detained more than 700 people – human rights activists

In Belarus since the beginning of the presidential campaign in the country total number of detainees was at least 703 people. About it it is spoken in the report of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee and the center “Spring”.

Of this total, 129 people were sentenced to administrative detention, 252 – fined, the number of political prisoners has reached 24 people, the report said.

“International organizations continue to urge the Belarusian authorities to stop repressions and to hold fair elections. Some members of the European Parliament believe that sanctions against Belarus should be resumed in case of failure to release all political prisoners. Authorities are pursuing a policy of repression against participants of peaceful assemblies, bloggers and political activists,” he reminded the human rights defenders.

According to observers, the election campaign in Belarus does not meet international standards of fair democratic elections based on the principles of equal political struggle.

“One of the potential presidential candidates, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko has actually started an active campaign with the active use of state media and resources the Executive “vertical”, – the report says.

In Belarus on 9 August presidential elections will take place. On the eve of voting the authorities stepped up pressure on the opposition. So, one of the main opponents of Lukashenka – banker Victor Babariko was taken into custody June 18, a day before the deadline, which is given to collect signatures for the candidate. Belarusian law enforcers accused him of financial crimes.

Another potential rival to Lukashenka, a former diplomat Valery Tsepkalo will not be able to continue to participate in the race, as the Central election Commission of Belarus has rejected more than half of the signatureshe gathered in support of the nomination.
