Former forward of “Dynamo”, “Milan” and “Chelsea”, and now the coach of the national team of Ukraine Andriy Shevchenko told me what he remembered of the legendary Ukrainian coach Valery Lobanovsky.
“The appointment of Valery Lobanovsky to the position of head coach of Ukraine, no doubt, was a great event for our country. There was much debate about combining the two posts — in Dynamo and the national team. But then it seemed justified. Today, I think, is unrealistic, and in that time, in some countries, such crossing could benefit. And although in the beginning of 2000-ies in the national team attracted more and more players from other clubs, and some of us went abroad, all, of course, boundless faith in the coaching genius of Valery Vasilyevich.
By fate, I managed to score in the first game of the national team under his leadership — in the test match with Bulgaria. We won with the score 1:0 and I this fight remember. For many, including me, Lobanovsky was more than a coach. This is the man who gave us a start in life. The mentor who taught us to truly understand what is professionalism, what is the attitude to the work you do, what is the proper analysis of their game.
Words hard to describe all that Valery Lobanovsky has done for me. Every day is a new lesson, every day you put your stash. However, the most memorable were the points that occurred after I moved to Milan. We had this tradition of arriving fans, I was always waiting in the airport machine, which sent me vasilyich.
The first thing I went to the base, climbed to his room, and we a few hours there and talked. The coach was important all the work methodology, training process, physical exercise, tactic, domestic issues, media pressure and fans and so on. All the little things and details. By the way, I came to him with notes, which fixed many things,” – said Shevchenko.
