Scientists have found that, to survive the first Martian colony is enough of just 110 people

If we talk about the practical aspects of the colonization of Mars, it will probably happen very soon. The most optimistic current model assumes the transport of the starter kit of supplies and equipment, why the need for dozens of huge space ships and dozens of years of stability, prosperity, and collaboration of peoples here on Earth. And this, in the light of the constant geopolitical conflict, is quite utopian.

But this does not prevent scientists to build models of the idealized version of the colonization of Mars, where the default all works as planned. Scientist Jean-Marc Salotti made a mathematical model of the development of the Martian colony, to understand what resources, energy, and technical resources it will need. He proceeded from the principle that reserves of this colony will not, but because every person, robot or object should be used to the maximum.

All the colonists in this model – universal workers, who at the start may not have the necessary amount of knowledge but the development of the colony will train each other. Initially they have minor problems, very important resource, so instead of charging a single colonist to weed beds, different way to prepare dinner, and the third to repair the robots, each task formed the right group of performers. Thus it is necessary to organize a rotation of people to avoid emotional burnout from routine.

Salotti singled out five types of activities for the colonists: the management of the ecosystem, energy, industrial production, construction and operation, and social work. He calculated that the minimum number of colonists to sustain life, cheerful spirit, and create resources for the development of the colony is 110 different people. In this case, each of them will be more personal time than the average blue-collar on the Ground.
