Institute of gene biology, RAS, jointly with the SRC VB “Vector” of Rospotrebnadzor began work on creating Onimusha sensitive to infection with the novel coronavirus. The work is carried out taking into account the world experience of creation of mice models of SARS and MERS, the new mouse model will be similar in symptoms to the pathogenesis of COVID-19 in humans. Such mice will allow to study vaccines and therapeutic drugs against COVID-19, is spoken in the message of Rospotrebnadzor.
The main difference between new mouse models from the existing ones will be her biological security – mice acquire sensitivity to the virus only after induction in the conditions of a Virology laboratory to eliminate risks to work with them in nurseries and non-specialized laboratories during a pandemic. In the first phase, mice will be created by method of transgenesis, but then as soon as the molecular cloning of complex structures, the developers will move to the use of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing. Scientists hope to have initial results in June 2020.
