Russia not seeking to join the format of the “Big seven” because it suits the format of the “Big twenty”. This was stated by the speaker of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, on July 27, reports TASS.
In his opinion, advanced format is responsible for the current economic situation in the world. Peskov also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has never taken the initiative of returning of Russia in the G7.
Peskov statement was made after the interview of the foreign Minister of Germany Heiko Maas edition of Rheinische Post in which Maas said that Germany did not support the proposal of U.S. President Donald trump to return to Russia in the G7.
The Minister recalled that the reasons of excluding Russia from the G8 was the annexation of the Crimea and the Russian aggression in Eastern Ukraine. According to the head of the German foreign Ministry, to resolve these issues, Russia is unable to return to G7.
The composition of the G7 includes the United States, Italy, Japan, Canada, France, Germany and the UK. A meeting of leaders of States are usually held once a year alternately in each country. Trump this year is headed by the “Big seven”. Russia participated in the summit of informal club of the most developed countries of the world since 1997. The G7 countries refused the format “Big eight” in March 2014 due to the annexation of Crimea.
The next G7 summit was to be held in June 2020 in the United States. In late may, trump announced the decision to postpone it to September, and the intention to invite to the meeting another four countries – Russia, Australia, India and South Korea.
Criticism of the initiative trump gave the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Germany. EU high representative for foreign and security policy, Josep Borrell also criticized the idea of trump and noted that the us President alone can not change the format of the G7.
