“Russia has always stood for peace.” Medvedev justified for his decision to start a war against Georgia

In the war against Georgia in August 2008 assumed for the sake of peace. On 8 August, in Facebook said the Deputy Chairman of the security Council of the Russian Federation, in 2008 the President of the country Dmitry Medvedev.

“Russia has always advocated and will advocate for peace and stability in the border States. Our every decision and action is dictated by this, absolutely sincere desire. At the same time Russia, and it must be clearly understood, will never tolerate attacks on our citizens, wherever it occurred. Our answer will always be absolutely adequate circumstances for the purposes of stability and security in our country and around the world,” he wrote.

According to the Deputy Chairman of the Russian security Council, his country in 2008, “answered the criminal behavior” of the Georgian leadership. He called it “the scum who gave the order to open fire on the houses of civilians, the defenseless elderly and children, according to Russian peacekeepers, which provided peace and security, including residents of Georgian villages”.

Medvedev said that Georgia’s actions in its territory was, “in fact,” the Russian Declaration of war.

“That’s why then I made a difficult but the only solution was to stand up for Abkhazia and South Ossetia, first, protecting them from aggression, and then, at the request of their citizens, recognizing their full independence. Otherwise, Transcaucasia would become a powder keg that Russia, which has always advocated the preservation of lasting peace in neighboring States, was totally unacceptable” – explained the former President.

Later Medvedev’s Facebook account disappeared. The text of the post is preserved on the website of radio station “Echo of Moscow”.

8-12 August 2008, Russian troops, jointly with South Ossetian forces drove Georgian troops out of South Ossetia, which is officially part of Georgia, temporarily taking the number adjacent to the conflict zone regions of Georgia. Later, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

During the conflict, writes “Georgia Online”, killing 408 citizens of Georgia (170 servicemen, 14 interior Ministry employees and 224 civilians), 2232 people were injured.

The imprint of the Russian Federation recognized the dead in the conflict 67 Russian servicemen, 270 soldiers were injured. During the war, according to the Russian side, were killed 162 people from South Ossetia.
