The final decision on the invitation of Russia at the summit “the Big seven” is the President of the United States Donald trump. At the briefing of July 1, said the head of the State Department Mike Pompeo. His words leads the state Department website.
“When Russia was in the G7, it has brought problems. Now they are not included in the group, but continue to represent us at risk. We need to talk with the Russians. The President decides whether he wants to see them at the summit, it’s his decision. I’ll leave it to his discretion. But I’m sure it is very important to frequently communicate with Russia,” said Pompeo.
He added that to continue the dialogue with the Russians it is important and appropriate in order to convince them to change their activities incompatible with the objectives of ensuring the security of the United States.
The composition of the G7 includes the United States, Italy, Japan, Canada, France, Germany and the UK. A meeting of leaders of States are usually held once a year alternately in each country. The President of the United States Donald trump is chairing this year the “Big seven”. Russia participated in the summit of informal club of the most developed countries of the world since 1997. The G7 countries refused the format “Big eight” in March 2014 due to the annexation of Crimea.
The next G7 summit was to be held in June 2020 in the United States. In late may, trump announced the decision to postpone it to September, and the intention to invite to the meeting another four countries – Russia, Australia, India and South Korea.
Criticism of the initiative trump gave the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Germany. EU high representative for foreign and security policy, Josep Borrell also criticized the idea of trump and noted that the us President alone can not change the format of the G7.
