Atlantic, according to Stoltenberg, is still for the Alliance of Central importance. In recent years, NATO registers the large-scale activity of the Russian submarines for all time.

NATO Secretary General expressed concern about the placed Russia in Europe missile 9M729 (according to NATO classification SSC-8).

A particular cause for alarm is the NATO deployment of missiles SSC-8, because previously this lead to the termination of the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles (INF Treaty). NATO is also concerned by Russia’s use of other new combat systems.

NATO Secretary General stressed that the Alliance nudaetsya in the new disarmament agreement, but not in a new arms race with Russia.

The United States in October 2018 announced its intention to suspend the performance signed in 1987 INF Treaty after the Russian army cruise missile 9М729.

The INF Treaty prohibited the parties to manufacture ballistic and cruise missiles, ground-based range from 500 km to 5.5 thousand km, testing and deployment. According to the Americans, 9М729 was tested on a range of more than 500 km.

4 December 2018 U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo called on Russia for 60 days to resume performance of the obligations under the Treaty on elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range. Deputy Pompeo Andrea Thompson explained that Russia needs to get rid of the missiles 9М729 or modify it to comply with the INF Treaty.

The Kremlin said that the US withdrawal from the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range can lead to the violation of strategic balance in the world.
