Malaria drugs increase the risk of death from COVID-19 – study

Antimalarial drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, sometimes used for the treatment of coronavirus infection COVID-19, not only useless, but also cause harm to patients. To such conclusion the group of scientists observing the treatment of more than 96 thousand patients with coronavirus in 671 the hospital on six continents. The results were published may 22 in the medical journal The Lancet.

The researchers came to the conclusion that the use of antimalarial drugs for coronavirus increases the risk of death by almost half.

So, the mortality rate among patients who received therapy with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine amounted to 9%. In the group of patients who were treated with chloroquine, mortality was higher by 7.4 percentage points (16.4 percent). In the third group of observed patients (treatment used hydroxychloroquine) the mortality rate reached 18%.

Even higher was the mortality rate among patients who took antibiotics with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, of 22.8% and 23.8%, respectively.

In February and March 2020, about “apparent effectiveness” of chloroquine in the treatment of coronavirus infection, said the Chinese physicians, in April French, pointing out a large number of unwanted side effects.

In late March, the people’s Deputy from “Servants of the people” Michael radutsky said that Ukraine is negotiating the supply of hydroxychloroquine. However, the results of the negotiations were not reported.

In may of the admission of hydroxychloroquine as a preventive measure against coronavirus was declared by the President of the United States Donald trump.
