The decision was taken due to the continuing spread of the infection outside of the seven prefectures, where the state of emergency in force since April 7. According to the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, the authorities hope that the emergency will help to reduce the contact of citizens “by at least 70%, and if possible – 80%.” He urged residents to eliminate unnecessary trips and large celebrations.
If the further spread of the coronavirus can be contained, the emergency mode will be cancelled from may 7.
