Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a meeting of the Knesset announced its intention to Annex the West Bank of the Jordan river. Transcript of the Prime Minister on the meeting of may 17 published (.doc) on the website of the Knesset.
Speaking on Israeli settlements in the West Bank, Netanyahu said: “It’s time to spread the sovereignty [of Israel] to the areas which are the cradle of the Jewish people, and to write another glorious Chapter in the history of Zionism”.
Israel occupied the West Bank of the Jordan river, East Jerusalem, Gaza and the Golan heights after the victory in the 1967 war. In 1980, Israel held the annexation of East Jerusalem and in 1981 the Golan heights. Most countries do not recognize Israeli sovereignty in these lands.
The resolution of the UN Security Council from 2016, demands that Israel halt settlement activity in the West Bank of the Jordan river. The Israeli government refuses to follow the resolution.
After the United States acceptance of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan heights in March 2019, Netanyahu talked about the possible annexation of Judea and Samaria in the West Bank.
In September 2019 Netanyahu said that the law on the distribution of Israeli sovereignty on the West Bank of the Jordan river will be accepted if re-elected on a post of the head of the government. The UN has stressed that such a move by Israel would be a “grave violation of international law”.
