The Bundestag has adopted amendments to the law according to which anyone who publicly burned a European Union flag or national flag of any state, faces up to three years in prison. It is reported by Bild.
As the newspaper notes, before Before that a fine or imprisonment is threatened only in the case of abuse of the state symbols of the Federal Republic of Germany. For emblems of other countries or the European Union comparable protection was only available under certain conditions.
The decision to expand the list was made in connection with the incident in 2017. As reported by “Deutsche Welle”, then, because of the U.S. recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in the heart of Berlin there was a mass demonstration in which they burnt Israeli flags and sounded anti-Semitic statements.
As a result of this incident, the Minister of foreign Affairs, Sigmar Gabriel, has promised to initiate the adoption of a new law that would impose a ban on burning flags.
