In Botswana in the Okavango Delta recorded a massive loss of elephants. Since may of this year for unknown reasons killing more than 350 animals, the British newspaper The Guardian.
At the moment the cause of death of elephants is not clear. At first scientists believed that animals infected with anthrax, but this assumption was not confirmed. Now there are two main versions: poisoning by an unknown toxin or the new disease, while not caused by a specific pathogen. Also as possible causes of the mass death called infection by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, however this is considered unlikely.
Director of conservation British charity organization Dr. National Park Rescue Niall McCann stated that the scope of death of elephants are unprecedented, especially considering the fact that it occurs outside the period of drought. The locals have seen weak and emaciated animals, and thus the number of dead individuals may increase.
At the same time about the deaths of elephants in neighbouring countries were reported.

The population of elephants in the Okavango Delta has about 15 thousand individuals.
