In Australia, environmental activists have won a court case over logging company VicForests. A lawsuit they filed three years ago on behalf of a rare possum, said on 1 June of The Conversation.
Legal proceedings against VicForests beginning in 2017, the organization Friends of the Leadbeater”s Possum. Environmental activists claimed that the company destroys the environment for the existence of the Leadbeater possum, which is under threat of extinction.
The Federal environmental law of Australia provides that logging, climate change, fires are the most threatening to the existence of animals, therefore, obliges logging companies to assess the negative impact of its activities on animals.
At the same time, the so-called regional forest land timber companies in Australia are exempt from Federal laws about the environment. Thus, companies put their own interests above the interests of endangered animals, said the activists.
Federal court of Australia found that VicForests ne conducted a comprehensive survey of forests in order to understand how to save the habitats of animals under threat of extinction, which violates the “Code of conduct for timber production” 2014.
Journalists believe that this case will have serious implications for logging operations regulated by regional forest agreements. Now the logging operations conducted under a regional forest agreement can no longer rely on the exemption from Federal environmental laws, if they threaten the endangered species of animals.
