In a Slovenian cave put on display three exceedingly rare “baby dragon”

In one of the caves of Slovenia put on display of three “baby dragon” – Proteus, which hatched here in 2016. Access to rare amphibians only open to 30 visitors a day.

Proteas are ancient amphibians are predators who live to a hundred years and produce offspring once a decade. In the Postojna cave in Slovenia biologists managed to get 21 baby Proteas, three of which decided to demonstrate to the public. In order to preserve rare and vulnerable species access to the rest of the population closed.

Proteas live in the underground rivers, and therefore completely blind. They reach a length of 35 cm and have four small limbs. Characteristic sign they are three branched Gill bone on the sides of the head. The Proteas thin pink skin, which allows you to see the internal organs. Curiously, the slow metabolism allows these amphibians to go without food for up to ten years.

Proteas live mainly in the Balkan underground rivers in the Postojna cave is 50 km from Slovenian capital Ljubljana, according to biologists, they live for millions of years.
