Forest fires in Siberia, hitting a record 2019

Forest fires, covering about 3 million hectares in Siberia, acquired the magnitude of a natural disaster. On 2 July stated on its website, the Russian branch of Greenpeace.

Most fire in five regions: Yakutia, Chukotka, Magadan region, in the North of Kamchatskiy Krai and Krasnoyarsk Krai.

“The situation with forest fires in Siberia and the far East is developing rapidly. Fires many times greater than happened in early July in previous years. The number of thermal spots – temperature anomalies of the earth’s surface, fixed by special satellites – four times more than an average at this time, and more of average peak values for the last 19 years,” warn environmentalists.

In the polar regions the temperature reaches +38 °C, almost no precipitation.

“From the fire disaster of 2019 the government has not learned any lessons, and disaster in the forests of Siberia and the Far East are likely to happen again. Forests are on fire, and in cities and towns hundreds and thousands of miles away from the fires will come again, and acrid smoke. Given the spread of the coronavirus, it is especially dangerous for people,” according to Greenpeace.

The organization’s experts note that about 90% of active fires occur in areas where local authorities may not put out the fire because there is no immediate threat to the settlements.

The Agency Bloomberg notes that pon data from the European service monitoring of the atmosphere in June due to the burning of the Siberian forests were released into the atmosphere 16.3 million tonnes of carbon higher than that of June 2019 and nine times the level in 2018. The fire season started unusually early – in March.

Senior research officer mark Parrington drew the attention of the Agency on a similar diurnal trend of fire activity this year compared to the year 2019, with fires, according to his observations, more in the Eastern Nearctic regions of Siberia.

In Siberia and the Russian far East in the summer of 2019 was burning the forest. Smoke from forest fires reached the territory of Alaska and the West coast of Canada.

The authorities of the Russian Federation reported that the majority of fires falls in remote areas and fight the fire starts only in case of threat to human settlements or infrastructure.

According to Greenpeace, as of August 13, 2019 the area of active fires in Siberia reached its maximum with the beginning of the year to 5.4 million hectares. Just 2019, withburned over 14.8 million hectares of forest.
