The Institute of emergency care named after N. In. Sklifosovsky Department of health and city hospital No. 52 held their first transfusions patients COVID-19 blood plasma donors that have already undergone the treatment for coronavirus infection and recovered. This was reported by Deputy Moscow mayor for social development Anastasia Rakova.
It is known that the blood of recovered patients contains antibodies to the disease, so it can be used for the treatment of patients with a new infection. Appropriate technology approved for use by the clinical Committee to combat coronavirus infection.
“We constantly monitor the development of colleagues in other countries, similar studies successfully held in China, Germany and the United States. Hope new method will help us to deal more effectively with the pandemic coronavirus. Today in Moscow for 11 recovered from COVID-19 became donors of blood plasma. Transfusion received 7 patients who are now being treated in city hospitals”, – told Vice-the mayor.
In the development and research of this technology taking part of the research Institute of emergency care. N. In. Sklifosovsky, city clinical hospital No. 52 and the Center blood. O. K. Gavrilov. Immunity of donors is studied in conjunction with the National research centre of epidemiology and Microbiology named after N. F.Gamalei. In the future technology will be able to learn from other medical facilities.
Preparation of plasma is as follows: recovered patients who agree to the procedure, carefully selected, are examined, they produce blood. The donor selection is carried out strictly according to certain requirements: availability of the medical report in the approved form about infection COVID-19, negative tests for HIV, hepatitis b and hepatitis C, complete blood count, biochemical blood tests, the presence of studies on the content of specific antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 and a number of other mandatory requirements. Specialists carry out tests of the plasma of the donor and check the strength of the immune response – how useful is the plasma for other patients. After that, the donor for 40 minutes is standard easy and painless procedure of plasmapheresis.
One donor can give plasma for one to three patients. As the doctors say, the most important is the understanding and responsiveness of potential donors. The more plasma specialists will be able to procure, the more people can be saved.
