COVID-19 may provoke the development of diabetes – scientists

In early June, a group of scientists from around the world said that COVID-19 is not only dangerous for people with diabetes, he may actually cause diabetes. This publication reports Science Alert.

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 is caused by own immune system attacking the islet cells in the pancreas that produce insulin – the so-called autoimmune disease.

Diabetes of the 2nd type occurs when the islet cells must produce massive amounts of insulin, because the main target organs do not respond properly to the insulin message. In the end, the islet cells are exhausted and die.

Viral infections can be associated with the patient’s symptoms of diabetes. They can also cause the destruction of the “factories” of the islet cells that produce insulin, causing chronic autoimmune response.

Long recorded the incidence of acute diabetes that develops while mumps and enteroviral infections, the study also found an increased risk of developing signs of autoimmunity of islet cells after respiratory infections.

The publication writes that recently, China has received a report about a young man in good health who first became ill with the heavy form of diabetes once contracted the coronavirus. In addition, it was reported on other similar cases.

It is assumed that after being hit in the islet cells of the pancreas COVID-19 disrupts the normal function of cells, leading to disturbances in ways that support the level of blood glucose through insulin secretion.

Scientists are working to establish a possible link between COVID-19 and the development of diabetes.

Flash coronavirus infection COVID-19 began in late 2019 in China. March 11, 2020, the world health organization declared the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to data from the American Johns Hopkins University, the total number of infected people in the world exceeded to 8.95 million, more than 4.4 million were cured, and 468,3 thousand died.
