Cancelled the big tennis tournament in Montreal, scheduled for August
Organization of the Tennis Canada announced the cancellation of the Rogers Cup in 2020, a big tennis tournament, scheduled from 7 till 16 Aug 2020.
The decision was made in connection with the pandemic coronavirus and subsequent measures imposed by the government of Quebec, prohibiting any activities until August 31, 2020. Tennis Canada is closely monitoring the development of the pandemic coronavirus for a few weeks and has daily contact with government officials and WTA.
Eugène Lapierre, Director, Rogers Cup, said: “In the beginning of the crisis COVID-19 we had hoped that the situation can be resolved in time to enable the conduct of the tournament as originally planned in the calendar. But we knew that the chances become more and more weak within the last week.
Our priority has always been ensuring the safety of players, fans, volunteers, our partners and our employees. Therefore, we do not welcome this news, but know that this decision was necessary. We would like to thank all our customers and partners for their cooperation and support in these difficult times. Be sure that in the coming months we will work diligently to make our next tournament a great collective celebration, during which we will be able to enjoy a new meeting”.
The following year, a similar tennis competition to be held from 6 to 15 August 2021.
