The UK has suspended the extradition agreement with Hong Kong because of the national security law of Hong Kong, which took in China. About July 20, said the head of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the UK Dominic Raab, reports the BBC.
The Minister said that the agreement will be suspended until official London is satisfied that the national security law on Hong Kong will not be misused in relation to persons extradited from the UK to Hong Kong.
China violates its international obligations by imposing the new Hong Kong law on national security, said Raab.
China responded by accusing the UK of meddling in the internal Affairs of the country and said that the respect all rules of international law.
In Britain fear that the extradition Treaty could be used by Beijing for the prosecution of politically objectionable individuals.
The extradition agreement between the UK and Hong Kong has more than 30 years. According to him, if a resident of Hong Kong is suspected of violating the law in British territory, the UK can ask for his extradition, and Vice versa.
Before that, the same decision was accepted by Canada and Australia. The US and the EU is also considering the possibility to suspend the extradition treaties.
On 30 June, the standing Committee of vsekitajsky meeting of national representatives adopted the law on the protection of national security in Hong Kong. The law was passed unanimously. Considering it took 15 minutes. Chinese President XI Jinping signed it the same day, and at 23.00 local time (18.00 CET) it came into force.
Hong Kong is a separate administrative region within China. Britain handed control of Hong Kong to China in 1997. According to the Sino-British joint Declaration and the basic law of Hong Kong, the territory granted broad autonomy until 2047 under the formula “one country, two systems”. It guarantees freedoms that are not enjoyed in China.
In the summer of 2019 in Hong Kong began anti-government protests in connection with the intention to pass a law that would allow extradition at the request of Chinese authorities. This document was revoked, but the protests continued. Their participants demanded to reduce the influence of mainland China on the city politics, early election, investigate the actions of police and an Amnesty for detained demonstrators. The epidemic of coronavirus suspended action, but at the end of April they resumed.
