A single injection of the nanoparticles to restore the sight of a half-blind rats

Age-related degenerative loss of eyesight until recently was considered a natural and inevitable sign of aging. However, recent studies have shown that this reversible process, degradation of the retina can be slowed down, and already damaged areas – repair or replace. Earlier for these purposes used bulky implants, but now physicians have the opportunity to apply for this nanoparticles.

An international group of scientists explores the potential of conjugated polymer nanoparticles (P3HT-NP). This light-sensitive elements, which are designed to respond to light and transmit a signal to the neurons of the retina. That is, to replace the degraded areas of the retina-like patches. P3HT-NP do not require an energy source to operate, and operate passively without affecting the operation of other parts of the eye.

To test the effectiveness of the methodology conducted a study on rats with pigmented retinitis, a disease characterized by gradual deterioration of vision. Experimental animals were made for only a single injection of P3HT-NP, after which the researchers saw an improvement in activity of the retina and the return of visual acuity. In fact, a single treatment session to fully heal the half-blind rats, and this effect persists for eight months.

Nanoparticles stimulated the activation of intact neurons in the structure of the retina, and managed to do without inflammatory processes. It is very reassuring and gives you a chance to learn how to use nanoparticles for the treatment of other degenerative diseases of organs of vision.
