12 April 1993 American tennis player of Greek origin Pete Sampras for the first time topped the world ranking, displacing his compatriot Jim courier.
Since then, Sampras intermittently stayed on top of a total of 286 weeks. Only in 2012, this record was able to beat Roger Federer.
Note that, on account of Sampras won 14 Grand Slam tournaments, only Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.
Still no tennis player could not beat the main achievement of Pete Sampras: American six consecutive years finished the season in first place in the world rankings.
